This image, along with seven others in Eric Paul Julien's Isle of Hispaniola series, received the Black & White Magazine 2008 Portfolio Contest Excellence Award.

Baton Rouge was created the day before carnival in Jacmel. It was fascinating to see an impoverished teen-ager take the utmost pride in meticulously cleaning the streets in his neighborhood.
