About the Calaveras series:

These images are part of a series called Calaveras. I was initially inspired to make them while thinking about the lives of people I’ve lost and the impact they’ve had on mine. In them I see my mother dancing on her coffin while my father serenades her on his old flamenco guitar; my grandmother sketches a portrait of my grandfather, her aviator beau; and my brilliant, tortured uncle, finally free of his demons, plays a flawless Chopin sonata.

Shortly after I completed this body of work I was diagnosed with cancer, and the significance of these images in my life and in my work came very sharply into focus. When I look at them now, they make me think of my own mortality and the tiny thread between life and death. They make me wonder how I’ll be remembered and where I’ll end up after I’m gone.

Calaveras was selected as a Merit Award Winner for B&W Magazine’s 2008 Portfolio issue.
